What are Sweatshops?
Sweatshops are clothing factories, usually owned by big businesses attempting to maximise profit, where workers (usually women); get very low wages, work long hours, work in poor, often dangerous, conditions, are treated badly by their employers and are not allowed to speak or join trade unions.
Where are Sweatshops located?
Sweatshops are widely spread across Asia, China and Latin America, where there are many people unemployed people desperate for any type of paid employment.
Companies that have known sweat shops: Abercrombie and Fitch, Gymboree, Hanes, Ikea, Kohl’s, LL Bean, Pier 1 Imports, Propper International, and Walmart, Nike (although they now apparently are 'sweatshop free'), Hollister, Dick Smith and hundreds of others.
